Why "Remy"?

 In the heart of Berlin, at the Frauenklinik, a story began to unfold that would shape the name behind our company. It was a crisp morning when my pregnant mother, went for her routine check-up. Little did she know that this visit would mark the beginning of a journey.

At 22 weeks pregnant, the doctors discovered that contractions had started. With urgency, they admitted her, fearing for my premature arrival. Medications were swiftly administered, but the dosage was too strong to take orally. Intravenous delivery was the only option, accompanied by Valium and alcohol. This cocktail, while necessary, left my mother feeling as if she had a constant hangover.

Days turned into weeks, and the routine continued. My mother remained on a drip, while taking valium and three tots of brandy a day. However, the hospital's brandy was unpalatable, so my father, always attentive, provided my mother with Remy Martin Cognac, to replace the hospital brandy. Visitors, rare as they were, shared in these moments, raising a glass to my health.

As the weeks passed, a test was conducted to determine the extent of my lung development. When the results showed readiness, my mother was taken off the drip, and I entered the world the following day.

During this ordeal, back in South Africa, where communication was not as swift, my grandmother, sought to connect. With none of the modern telephone systems we have today, each call had to be manually connected through local and international switchboards. My South African grandmother, unable to speak German, relied on Sister Vincent, a German-speaking Roman Catholic sister, to bridge the gap. With her help, my grandmother could speak to my mother (her daughter), who had previously had a phone specially installed next to her bed.

The significance of Sister Vincent and Remy Martin Cognac during my mother's ordeal led to my name. 

Vincent, for the vital link Sister Vincent provided, and Remy, for the sedative that kept my mother calm and me safe. 

This story, of love, resilience, and connection, became the origin behind my name and the name of this brand, a testament to the journey that brought me into the world.
